Running JoinFS on Linux

Postby FSVKenny » Mon Feb 10, 2020 11:46 pm

Hello.
I have just upgraded my server PC from Win7 to Win10 home. JoinFS is running just fine on window 10 home, but I also run a application of FSHost.

After the upgrade to windows 10, my members and I are having massive security issues with window. Even though I have the ports forwarded through the router, windows firewall and the antivirus no one can find the FSHost application.

At this point I thinking about going to Linux, so is my question concerning JoinFS on Linux is, what version of Linux would work the best and what would I need for JoinFS?

Thank you for the help,
FSV1142 Kenny

Hi Kenny.

Linux is brilliant in my opinion.
No bloatware that you now get with win10 and it's so configurable (if you know how).

If I was somebody wanting to start out with linux for the first time I would start with Ubuntu.
The only reason being is that has the most help available online, IMO.

That said all linux flavours work near enough the same way.

I run something called CENTOS for my servers, Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE desktop) on my laptop, debian on another laptop and have 3 raspberry pis running raspbian.

To get JoinFS up and running you'll need the following.

1. Install the linux distro of your choice.
2. Install a program called wine.
3. Install the Xpack Simconnect using wine.
4. Install JoinFS using wine.

You may also need to install a dotnet redistribution package using wine, I cant remember.

To install wine using ubuntu..
Open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install wine.

If you want to try everything before installing on a HDD write ubuntu to a usb stick and run it from the usb stick.
No changes are then made to your HDD unless you choose too.

Thanks for the reply Roo!

I was looking at Linux Mint. How would I go about installing Linux over Windows?

Mint is also a good one as it's based on Ubuntu.

https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... /burn.html

1. Download the mint iso
2. Download etcher.
3. Use etcher to put the iso on to a usb stick.
4. Boot your PC from usb and give mint a whirl.

If you like it then you can click install from the usb.
