requirement to host a session

Postby efa » Fri Dec 15, 2017 12:35 pm

hi,
we have a server behind a firewall, that keep all the incoming socket request closed.
We installed there JoinFS and are using that installation to create flight sessions and all our association pilots connect to that.
Well or bad this is stable and mostly satisfying, apart some rare mutual non-visibility we are investigating.

How is working this? Why is not required to open at least a port to host a session?
The JoinFS network use an undocumented central server to coordinate the create sessions, like the bittorrent trackers?

In other words, what are the requirements to host a session?
This can help also in understand our mutual non-visibility, so I ask.

Hi,

If other people are able to connect to your JoinFS client then I don't think that your server is blocking all incoming connections.

If you are hosting a session on a typical home network setup, then you need to allow JoinFS through the Windows firewall, and you need to configure your network router to 'port forward' your chosen port, UDP-only to your server's internal IP address.

Without knowing the specifics of your router, it may be that it has detected JoinFS using that port and is allowing incoming connection automatically.

hope that helps,
Peter

so do you confirm that to create and host a flight session with JoinFS, at least is necessary to forward the UDP 6112 ?

Yes, that's right. That will allow incoming connections to reach JoinFS.

thank you.

In the past we made some tests to be sure the 6112 is opened,
we runt JoinFS, and used the web site:
https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
but it say always door closed. So we were still not sure if the door is opened.

While this web site work well for other protocols and server (SSH, Torrent, Muble server, VNC, ...) seems not reliable for JoinFS

As the server still can host sessions, with your answer, we know the door is opened.

Sad to say seems that the only method to check (for sure) if the door is opened for JoinFS, is to try to host a session
